Laleo Language Limited - Terms of Service

1. Introduction and Acceptance

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Laleo Language website and services (the "Service") operated by Laleo Language Limited, a company registered in England and Wales ("Laleo", "we", "us", or "our").

By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree to these Terms, you may not use the Service.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old to use the Service. By using the Service, you represent and warrant that you are at least 18 years of age.

3. Account Registration

3.1 Account Creation

To access certain features of the Service, you must create an account. You agree to:

• Provide accurate, current, and complete information during registration
• Maintain and promptly update your account information
• Keep your account access credentials or login links secure and confidential
• Accept responsibility for all activities that occur under your account

3.2 Account Security

You must notify us immediately of any unauthorised access to or use of your account. We are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your failure to protect your account credentials.

4. Subscription and Payment

4.1 Subscription Plans

The Service is offered on a subscription basis. Current pricing and plan details are available on our website. We reserve the right to modify pricing with reasonable notice to existing subscribers.

4.2 Payment Processing

Payments are processed by Paddle.com Market Limited ("Paddle"), who acts as the Merchant of Record for all transactions. By subscribing to the Service, you also agree to Paddle's terms of service and privacy policy.

4.3 Billing

• Monthly subscriptions are billed in advance on a monthly basis
• Annual subscriptions are billed in advance for the full year
• Subscriptions automatically renew unless cancelled before the renewal date

4.4 Cancellation

You may cancel your subscription at any time through your account settings or by contacting us. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period.

5. Refund Policy

We want you to be satisfied with the Service. Our refund policy is as follows:

5.1 Monthly Subscriptions

You may request a full refund of your most recent monthly payment at any time. Refunds are limited to one month of service.

5.2 Annual Subscriptions

If you cancel an annual subscription within the first four months of the subscription period, you may request a refund calculated as follows:

• You will be charged the monthly rate for each full calendar month that elapsed between the start of your subscription and your cancellation date
• The refund will be the difference between your annual payment and the sum of those monthly charges
• A partial month at the time of cancellation is not charged

"Monthly rate" means the then-current standard monthly price for your plan at the time you purchased the annual subscription.

After the first four months of the subscription period, no refund is available for annual subscriptions.

This refund window applies to each annual subscription period, including renewals.

Example:

If the annual price is £100 and the monthly price is £10:

• Cancel after 15 days → refund of £100 (no full months elapsed)
• Cancel after 2 months and 20 days → refund of £80 (2 × £10 = £20 charged)
• Cancel after 5 months → no refund available

5.3 Requesting a Refund

To request a refund, contact us at [email protected]. Refunds are typically processed within 14 days and returned via your original payment method.

5.4 Right to Cancel (UK/EU Consumers)

Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, you have the right to cancel your subscription within 14 days of purchase without giving any reason. However, if you access the Service during this period, you acknowledge that you will lose this right to cancel. By starting to use the Service, you expressly consent to immediate access and acknowledge that you lose your right of withdrawal.

6. The Service

6.1 Description

Laleo provides a language learning platform that uses algorithmic content selection ("Guided Immersion") to help users develop reading proficiency in supported languages. The Service currently focuses on Biblical (Koine) Greek; availability of languages and features may vary over time.

6.2 How the Service Works

The Service:

• Tracks the texts you read within the platform
• Models your familiarity with vocabulary and grammar based on your reading history
• Recommends texts at an appropriate difficulty level for your current ability
• Provides study aids including glosses, parsing information, and translations

6.3 Service Limitations and Disclaimers

Individual Difficulty Modelling:

The Service calculates difficulty based on your specific reading history within our platform. This means:

• If you have prior language knowledge from other sources, the system will initially treat you as a beginner until it learns your actual ability
• Difficulty assessments are estimates based on our algorithm, not guarantees of comprehension
• Two users at objectively similar skill levels may receive different recommendations

Educational Outcomes:

• The Service is a tool to support language learning, not a complete educational programme
• Learning outcomes vary significantly between individuals based on factors including time invested, prior knowledge, learning aptitude, and engagement
• We do not guarantee any particular level of proficiency or rate of progress
• The Service is not a substitute for formal instruction, tutoring, or academic courses
• No academic credit, certification, or accreditation is provided

Content Accuracy:

• Glosses, translations, and grammatical parsing are provided as study aids and may contain errors
• The Service should not be used as the sole authoritative source for biblical scholarship, translation, or theological study
• We make reasonable efforts to ensure accuracy but do not warrant that all linguistic information is error-free

6.4 Service Availability

We strive to maintain continuous availability of the Service but do not guarantee uninterrupted access. The Service may be temporarily unavailable due to:

• Scheduled maintenance (we will provide reasonable advance notice where possible)
• Urgent technical issues or security concerns
• Circumstances beyond our reasonable control

7. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

• Share your account credentials with others
• Attempt to access another user's account
• Use automated systems (bots, scrapers, etc.) to access the Service without our written permission
• Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code of the Service
• Use the Service for any illegal purpose
• Attempt to interfere with or disrupt the Service or its infrastructure
• Circumvent any access controls or usage limits

8. Intellectual Property

8.1 Our Intellectual Property

The Service, including its algorithms, software, design, and original content, is owned by Laleo Language Limited and protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws. Your subscription grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to access and use the Service for personal, non-commercial language learning purposes.

8.2 Third-Party Content

The Service includes biblical texts and other materials that may be subject to third-party copyrights or licences. Such content is used under applicable licences and remains the property of its respective owners.

8.3 Your Data

You retain ownership of any data you provide to us (such as account information). By using the Service, you grant us a licence to use your reading history and study data to provide and improve the Service, as described in our Privacy Policy.

9. Data and Privacy

Your use of the Service is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which describes how we collect, use, and protect your personal information and study data.

The Service requires collection and processing of your reading history (viewlogs) to function. This data is essential to providing personalised content recommendations. By using the Service, you consent to this data collection as described in our Privacy Policy.

10. Limitation of Liability

10.1 Disclaimer of Warranties

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

10.2 Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law:

• We shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including loss of profits, data, or goodwill
• Our total liability for any claims arising from or related to the Service shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim

10.3 Consumer Rights

Nothing in these Terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer under applicable law, including the Consumer Rights Act 2015. The limitations above apply only to the extent permitted by law.

11. Termination

11.1 Termination by You

You may terminate your account at any time by cancelling your subscription and contacting us to request account deletion.

11.2 Termination by Us

We may suspend or terminate your account if:

• You breach these Terms
• You fail to pay subscription fees when due
• We reasonably believe your use of the Service poses a security risk
• We are required to do so by law

11.3 Effect of Termination

Upon termination:

• Your right to access the Service ends immediately
• We will delete your personal data within 30 days, unless we are required by law to retain it
• We may retain aggregated, de-identified analytics derived from your usage after deletion
• You may request a copy of your data before deletion (see our Privacy Policy for details)
• Any refund due will be processed in accordance with Section 5

12. Changes to These Terms

We may modify these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by email or through the Service at least 30 days before the changes take effect. Your continued use of the Service after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the modified Terms.

If you do not agree to the modified Terms, you may cancel your subscription before the changes take effect.

13. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales.

Any disputes arising from or relating to these Terms or your use of the Service shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

14. General Provisions

14.1 Entire Agreement

These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy and Refund Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and Laleo regarding the Service.

14.2 Severability

If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.

14.3 Waiver

Our failure to enforce any right or provision of these Terms does not constitute a waiver of that right or provision.

14.4 Assignment

You may not assign or transfer your rights under these Terms without our prior written consent. We may assign our rights and obligations under these Terms without restriction.
